Smartphone manufacturers are left only with two choices when deciding which SoC to use. Huawei mostly uses its own Kirin SoC for flagship phones, and others can choose between cheaper, but slower MediaTek chips or to use more expensive, but faster Qualcomm chips.

All those chips are based on ARM's reference designs and are really good, but Samsung has decided to take a different path and design a new Exynos M1 chipset that will feature custom cores. First details reveal the new chipset will debut with the Galaxy S7 and are around 45% faster than the current Exynos 7420 and will most likely come with its own GPU. If this is true, then Qualcomm can be worried since even current Exynos 7420 is faster than its flagship SoC.
