With its newest 10-core MT6797 chipset, MediaTek has plans to attack Qualcomm with its full strength. Previously, MediaTek was only known for entry- and mid-range chipsets, but lately the company has changed its plans and will also compete in the high-end segment.
During an event, MediaTek has revealed some of the information about the Helio X20, a 10-core chipset. The chipset incorporates four 1.4 GHz ARM Cortex-A53 cores for basic processing, four 2.0 GHz ARM Cortex-A57 cores for middle to heavy usages and two 2.5 GHz ARM Cortex A72 for maximum performance. The GPU is an ARM Mali-T880 MP4 graphics chip clocked to 700 MHz. It supports up to 2,560 x 1,600 pixels resolution and can encode & decode H.265 4K/2K videos at 30 FPS. It is manufactured using 20 nm process, which is not on pair with Samsung, but still good enough.
For the imaging department, the chipset supports up to 25 MP camera sensors and Native3D 2.0 technology, which can take three-dimensional stills.
One of the downsides is the lack of LPDDR4 RAM support, since it supports only 993 MHz LPDDR3 RAM. Another is a support for LTE Cat-6, while others have already switched to LTE Cat-9.
First benchmarks will reveal how good the chipset is, but since MediaTek plans to compete with Snapdragon 810 it should be good.
