Sharp will soon release TVs that have a Roku built-in. Rokus are one of the most popular types of set-top boxes but they aren't that necessary if your TV has Roku functionality built-in. Rather than continue solely making dongles and boxes, Roku has signed deals with multiple TV companies, one of which is now Sharp.
It first entered into partnerships with TCL and Hisense so that sets from those companies could include Roku features. Since then, Insignia, Haier, and Sharp have been added to the list of Roku partners. Each will release TVs that include thousands of streaming channels in a Roku software bundle.
Beginning next month, there will be Roku TV sets from Sharp in the US and Canada. They'll be sold exclusively through Best Buy and each will come with a Roku-like remote. The Roku OS for these TV sets will have features like personal feeds and voice search, but the latter requires an iOS or Android app.
Just two Roku TV models from Sharp have been announced. There is a 43-inch 1080p set for $380 and a 50-inch 1080p TV for $500. Sharp doesn't intend to replace its smart platform on all models with Roku. |
