Handset demand in China and other emerging markets are expected to rise rapidly in the second half of 2015, according to MediaTek senior VP Chu Shang-tsu.

Brand handset manufacturers and ODMs have stepped up their pace of orders since May, said Chu. MediaTek's shipments of 3G and 4G handset chips will be driven by a substantial pick-up in demand for handsets in China and other emerging markets during the second half of 2015, Chu indicated.

MediaTek will commit itself to achieving its shipment goal for 2015, Chu noted. MediaTek targets shipping 150 million 4G phone chips, and a total of 450 million mobile phone chips this year.

MediaTek saw its revenues decrease 14% sequentially in the first quarter of 2015. The company expects its second-quarter revenues to register another decrease of up to 5%, or up to 3% growth, sequentially.
