Apple's $930 million win against Samsung in a patent case is going to become a smaller win. The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has said Samsung did infringe on Apple patents but it changed the initial ruling to say Samsung didn't infringe on the overall design of Apple's phones. Due to the smaller extent of infringement, the initial settlement is going to be reduced. Apple will now receive around $548 million, but a lower court will give the final judgement.
The tech companies have fought back-and-forth since 2011. Apple originally alleged in court that Samsung had infringed on design and utility patents for the iPhone. Despite wanting to receive $2.5 billion in damages, the court had decided Samsung would pay a little under $1 billion.
Now, due to this further change by the court, Apple is going to receive less money. |
