Foxconn Electronics will benefit the most for snapping up more windfall smartphone orders as handset vendors including Asustek Computer and Xiaomi Technology are foraying into the smartphone markets in India, Brazil and other emerging economies, according to industry sources.

Smartphone vendors have been eagerly seeking local production partners in India and Brazil as the governments of these two countries are encouraging foreign vendors to set up production lines locally by imposing high tariff rates on imports of mobile devices, said the sources.

Since Foxconn has already established production bases as well as comprehensive supply chains in both India and Brazil, the company has emerged as the first choice for handset brands to place ODM smartphone orders, added the sources.

Asustek began to market its ZenFone series smartphones in Brazil in October 2014 and has been outsourcing all its ZenFone smartphones to the local plant set up by Foxconn, according to CEO Jerry Shen.

Asustek's sales of its ZenFone 2 family smartphones in Brazil so far in 2015 have been better than expected, with total shipments likely to reach one million units in the year, Shen revealed.

Asustek's shipments of ZenFone smartphones to India are currently manufactured in India and China. Local production of ZenFone devices in India reaches 200,000 units a month at present, and most models are being built using Qualcomm's CPUs. But the vendor will also utilize MediaTek's CPUs for production later.

Including the high-end ZenFone models built with Intel's processors in China, Asustek aims to ship three million smartphones to India in 2015, Shen said.

Asustek shipped five million smartphones in the second quarter of 2015, bringing the total smartphone shipments for the first half of the year to eight million units, compared to 1.2 million shipped a year earlier period.

Buoyed by the roll-outs of its ZenFone 2 Lazer, ZenFone 2 Deluxe and ZenFone 2 Selfie recently, Asustek expects to ship six million smartphones in the third quarter and still maintains its shipment goal of 17-25 million units for all 2015 unchanged, Shen said.
