The vast majority of new smartphones sold are running Android or iOS. A report on the most recent quarterly smartphone sales data is out from Gartner and it says 96.8% of new smartphones sold are iPhones or Android devices. There were 329 million recorded phone sales during the last quarter and 319 million were iOS or Android units.
Gartner's analysis shows that this last quarter tied with the first quarter of 2015 for the highest percentage of the market controlled by those two platforms.
This report notes that there are few places in the world where the smartphone industry can still grow at a fast rate. Even China, which is an important market for smartphone companies, "has reached saturation."
Given widespread saturation and a market driven by phone replacements, not new smartphone users, the slowest growth (13.5%) in global phone sales since 2013 has been recorded. |
