Microsoft is expected to unveil Windows 10 Mobile-based mobile devices, including Lumia smartphones and Surface tablets, at a product event to be held in New York on October 6, according to industry sources.

Microsoft have recently revamped its strategy for handset business and will launch smartphones for the high-end, business and entry-level segments, the sources said.

The first Windows 10 Mobile-based models are expected to target the high-end segment in order to demonstrate the competitiveness of the new OS and other functionality, including Cortana, Continuum and the new Edge browser, said the sources.

However, the effectiveness of the initial marketing efforts for Windows 10 Mobile is likely to be limited as other vendors including HTC, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are reluctant to step into the development of Windows 10 Mobile-based smartphones, the sources commented.

So far, only Alcatel (TCL) and Acer have voiced support for the Windows 10 Mobile, with Alcatel planning to launch entry-level and mid-range models for the US market at the end of 2015, while Acer plans to launch Windows 10 Mobile-based Jade Primo for the mid-range to high-end segment.

With the absence of support from first-tier vendor, Microsoft is likely to be forced to seek cooperation from medium and small size regional vendors in China, India, Southeast Asia and Latin America, said the sources.
