Both Samsung and TSMC seem to be manufacturing Apple's A9 chip, but the units coming from the companies aren't the same. The A9 chip is used in the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. Chipworks reports the units created by Samsung are around 10% smaller than the A9 chips from TSMC, coming out to 96 mm2 and 104.5 mm2 respectively.

Since the chips are technically the same, it is possible Samsung's units are a little more efficient than those from TSMC. If that is the case, the difference will be very small.

The A9 processor is supposed to be 70% faster than the A8 that was used in devices last year. Apple's upcoming iPad Pro will use the A9X, a faster version of the A9.
