IC design house MediaTek will focus on smartphones, and has introduced Android and Windows Phone chipset solutions to grab a share of the global brand vendor market, according to company chairman Tsai Ming-Kai, adding that expansion of the China market should help MediaTek halt its sales decline in 2011.
MediaTek has announced consolidated revenues of NT$7.361 billion (US$243.98 million) for November 2010, down 0.19% sequentially and 27.22% on year, and also below market expectations of NT$7.5-8 billion.
The lower-than expected results were largely due to a price cut in early October and IT chips entering the annual off-season in November. MediaTek pointed out that it is normal for sales to dip in October and November but projected a modest improvement for December, and said fourth-quarter revenues should fulfill previous forecasts.
MediaTek had projected fourth-quarter revenues to reach NT$22.5-24 billion, which means December revenues will fall in the range of NT$7.7-9.2 billion. Revenues for the first 11 months of 2010 totaled NT$105.52 billion, decreasing 0.36% from a year earlier, according to company data.
