Technology that was patented by the University of Wisconsin was used by Apple to create some of its processors, and due to that patent infringement, Apple could face an $862 million fine. A US jury assigned to the case ruled Apple used the technology in question and District Judge William Conley says the company is now liable.

As the case moves forward, the amount Apple must pay could rise, especially if it is determined the patent infringement was intentional.

In February 2014, the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) filed a lawsuit against Apple. The lawsuit claimed the company had used patented technology to create its A7, A8, and A8X processors. One of Apple's first responses was to go after the patent itself, but its petition to the US Patent and Trademark Office to have the patent reviewed was denied.
