Rexchip Electronics is expected to output 20,000 12-inch wafers for 2Gb DDR3 memory in December, and allocate its entire capacity to produce 2Gb chips in the first quarter of 2011.
Along with ramp-ups at Nanya Technology and Inotera Memories, the increased supply of 2Gb DDR3 will likely place further downward pressure on the chip prices in 2011. Average spot prices for 2Gb DDR3 memory fell below US$2 mark to close at US$1.95 on December 20, versus US$1.15 for 1Gb DDR3 parts.
Nanya and Inotera have scaled up their output of 2Gb chips using 50nm process technology since the second half of 2010, according to previous reports.
Rexchip is set to convert all of its chip production to 45nm process technology by the end of 2010. It currently operates a 12-inch fab which is capable of producing about 80,000 wafer starts a month.
