ODM Compal Electronics expects notebook shipments in the fourth quarter of 2015 to decrease 6-9% on quarter and shipments of tablets and smartphones together to increase at least 30%, company president Ray Chen said at a November 12 investors conference.

Compal expects to ship 39 million notebooks, 20 million tablets and 30 million smartphones in 2015, Chen said. For 2016, notebook shipments will remain unchanged or drop slightly on year, while shipments of tablets and smartphones will grow by over 30% and up to 10%, respectively, Chen indicated. The revenue proportion for product lines other than notebooks is expected to rise from 26% in 2015 to over 35% in 2016, Chen said.

Compal has stepped into medical care by establishing a health and medical care business group, Chen noted. In line with the new business, Compal and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in June 2015 jointly set up a health care technology R&D center to develop smart clothing capable of taking physiological measurements, acquired a 20.54% stake in Avalue Technology which develops computing solutions used in medical care, and acquired an over 50% stake in biosensor developer General Life Biotechnology.

In addition to factories in China, Compal has set up production bases in India and Vietnam, with production lines in India to come into operation in the first quarter of 2016, Chen said.
