While Qualcomm, MediaTek and other manufacturers offer solid mobile chipsets, more manufacturers are trying to move away from them and develop their own chipsets, to lower the cost of their devices. LG is currently developing their own mobile chip called Nuclun 2.
According to the report from Business Korea, the company is currently "moving to pilot production of ARM-based 64-bit mobile AP called the Nuclun 2 by using Intel's 14-nanometer FinFET technology and TSMC's 16-nm FinFET technology."
Other reports say the chip manufactured by Intel allegedly offer better performance, but Intel won't be manufacturing the Nuclun 2 SoC after all. It looks like the reason behind that is due to a low production capacity from Intel and that could be the main reason LG opted for TSMC. |
