Japan Display is moving towards a complete takeover of Sharp's LCD business, according to Mainichi (Japan). With this acquisition, Japan Display would end up being the largest maker of small and mid-sized LCD panels with a 30% market share. Japan Display currently has a 17% share in that area.

This deal may only go through if Sharp can have some of its debt to Japanese investors waived. A public and private sector group in Japan, Innovation Network Corporation of Japan, has said the debt should be waived in return for investments.

Japan Display also wants to acquire some important display patents owned by Sharp.
