Apple is looking to get OLED displays from Samsung Display in addition to supply from LG Display in order to rely less on a single supplier as well as create more room for price negotiations, according to a new report from Korea-based iNews24.
Apple is concerned over pricing for the technology used in small- to medium-size products and will use multiple suppliers to help create space for price negotiations. LG Display is expected to be the main supplier of small- to medium-size OLED panels to Apple, but Samsung's role is expected to grow.
The report said Samsung also currently has better pricing for its OLED lineup compared with LG and that the company's supply is expected to grow following new production investments in 2016 at Samsung's 6G A3 line which will reportedly expand capacity by 15,000 substrates a month.
Meanwhile, other Asia-based media reports have recently stated Korea-based makers continue to increase yields for OLED and that prices have been reducing quickly, prompting new vendors to incorporate the technology into high-end and even mid-range handsets for release in 2016. |
