HP has a new Windows phone that is supposed to double as the tech behind a lightweight PC. The Elite x3 uses Windows' Continuum feature to plug into a display and provide a Windows 10 experience, albeit with performance restrictions because of the phone-level specs.
The Elite x3 is being targeted at businesses which may find a one-device solution attractive. It offers a Snapdragon 820 processor, a 5.95-inch quad HD display, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of expandable storage, a 4150 mAh battery, and a front-facing speaker from Bang & Olufsen. Those specs are pretty good for a high-end phone and even good enough to provide a Continuum-based desktop experience.
HP has two accessories for the phone, the Desk Dock and the Mobile Extender. The Desk Dock is a docking system that comes with DisplayPort, USB, and USB-C. The Mobile Extender is a 12.5-inch laptop-style display.
It may be neat to have your phone double as the guts to your PC, but there's still a big downside to the device: the fact that it runs Windows. Microsoft isn't supporting its mobile OS to make it a real competitor to Android or iOS, and Windows has far fewer apps than other mobile platforms. |
