Qualcomm is likely to dominate the application processor market for high-end Android smartphones in the first half of 2016, powered by its Snapdragon 820 chips, according to industry sources.

Qualcomm has been promoting its Snapdragon 820 chips since the second half of 2015 and has won adoption from Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Sony Mobile Communications, HTC and China-based vendors Xiaomi Technology, Vivo and LeTV, the sources indicated.

While specifications of new flagship models to be released by most vendors for the first half of 2016 are still unavailable, these coming models mostly will be powered by Snapdragon chips, the sources added.

More than 100 mobile devices powered by Snapdragon 820 chips are currently under development, according to Qualcomm senior vice president for global marketing Tim McDonough.

Additionally, more mobile device vendors are adopting the Snapdragon 820 platform for VR (virtual reality) devices, robots and commercial drones, said McDonough, adding that Qualcomm has also launched Snapdragon 820A to enable automakers to develop driving assistance systems and telematics/entertainment systems for connected car applications.
