Memory-IC packaging and testing houses Powertech Technology (PTI) and Walton Advanced Engineering are expected to see substantial gains in orders in the second quarter of 2011, thanks to rising demand from smartphone and tablet PC applications, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report.
With Toshiba resuming normal supply of its NAND chips after a plant outage resulted in shipment losses, PTI will start seeing orders from the chip vendor pick up in March, the report said. Meanwhile, Toshiba's reported orders of eMMC NAND solutions from Samsung Electronics, HTC and Apple will in turn likely boost its orders to the backend partner, the report indicated.
PTI has also secured large orders for mobile DRAM from Elpida Memory, with shipments to kick off in the second quarter, the report added.
Elpida has also placed orders for mobile DRAM chips with Walton, according to the report. In anticipation of rising mobile DRAM demand, Elpida added Walton as the other backend service provider for the memory with shipments to begin in the second quarter.
Walton president Yu Hong-chi was quoted as saying in previous reports that rising smartphone and tablet demand will buoy the company's revenues generated from orders for mobile DRAM chips in 2011.
