China-based smartphone Oppo is expected to ship over 80 million smartphones in 2016, an increase of 60% from a year earlier, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report.

Oppo has continued to revise upward its shipment target for 2016, causing tight supplies for some key components, including chipsets, at its suppliers, said the paper.

The 12-year-old Oppo is likely to replace Xiaomi Technology as the fourth largest smartphone brand globally in 2016, commented the paper.

Oppo saw its smartphone shipments grow 145% on year to 16.112 million units in the first quarter of 2016, taking the fourth position in the global smartphone rankings with a 4.6% share, according to Gartner.

Xiaomi ranked fifth with shipments totaling 15.048 million units or 4.3% as Gartner's data showed.
