Worldwide PC shipments (excluding handhelds, tablets and portable PCs with detachable keyboards) are forecast to decline 7.3% on year to 255.6 million units in 2016, according to an updated forecast from IDC.

The outlook continues to call for progressively smaller declines through 2017 followed by stable volume in 2018, but total shipments will drop to 249.5 million units in 2020, IDC added.

Global PC shipments declined 12.5% in the first quarter of 2016, lower than IDC's forecast of a slide of 11.3%. Weak currencies, depressed commodity prices, political uncertainty, and delayed projects have continued to constrain shipments, IDC said.

Global notebook shipments will reach 152.3 million units in 2016, with 84.8 million shipped to mature markets and 67.5 million to emerging markets, according to the data.

Shipments of desktop PCs will total 103.3 million units in 2016, of which 38.3 million shipped to mature markets and the remaining 65.1 million to emerging markets, the data showed.
