MediaTek has announced its participation in China Mobile's 5G Joint Innovation Center project.

MediaTek is also collaborating with Japan's NTT DoCoMo on future 5G deployment. Earlier in 2016, the pair announced their partnership for 5G technology development and trials.

China Mobile in February 2016 launched its 5G Joint Innovation Center project with early partners including Huawei, ZTE, Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm, Datang, Intel, Keysight, Beijing Shougang Automation Information Technology, Haier, and Hisense.

China Mobile indicated the center will conduct joint innovation on applications and products with industry partners in such areas as basic communications, IoT, telematics, industrial Internet, cloud robotics and virtual/augmented reality, through open labs. The goal is to build an integrated cross-industry ecosystem and achieve win-win cooperation in the process of migrating from 4G to 5G.
